WHY?
 With
the myriad of feeds and supplements on the market, it may be
difficult to understand how one feed can fulfil the nutrient
requirements of a variety of horses. We often forget that before
the advent of compound mixes most horses were fed on the same
feed ingredients such as oats, barley, bran etc. They were simply
fed different quantities to meet their individual energy requirements.
Although this makes partial sense, scientific research has now
proven that starch based cereal products are not well suited
to the digestive system of the horse, and many physiological
and psychological problems that we see today are caused by our
failure to address the horse's evolved feeding behaviour and
digestive capacity.
HOW?
For our horses to remain healthy
and perform well, we must continually remind ourselves that
the horse evolved as a trickle feeding herbivore designed to
digest continuous amounts of forage and plant fibre. He is NOT a cereal 'meal-eater' like us.
With this in mind, Primero Equine has formulated a unique, natural
feed designed to enhance equine digestive health and performance.
As qualified equine physiologists, our first commitment is to
the horse, not aesthetic appearance or commercial viability.
When formulating Total, we did not look for any comparisons
within the existing feed market, and sourced only high quality
ingredients that are proven to be well digested and beneficial
to the horse.
THE
FEED
 Of
Course digestible fibre was first and foremost, so high quality
Grass Pellets
and Fresh Dried Grass
forms the foundation of the feed. This also fulfils the innate
chewing desire that all horses have, producing salivary buffers
for gastric acid and helping to prevent sharp edges on teeth,
caused by the reduced jaw action employed when chewing cereals
meals.
Vitamins and minerals such
as Vitamin E and Selenium
are elevated to meet new published requirements, along with
Electrolytes
to replace minerals lost through sweat and help prevent premature
fatigue in working and competition horses. Energy is supplied
by pure Soya Oil,
which is well digested by the horse and promotes calm, sustained
energy. Fresh Dried Mint and
Garlic are included for their known beneficial
properties, along with the well researched live yeast probiotic
Yea-Sacc1026
which enhances fibre digestion & nutrient absorption, and helps
maintain a stable hind gut environment.
The resulting product is a
unique, natural feed which we believe will help pioneer a return
to more natural feeding of horses whereby their evolved digestive
physiology is a primary consideration. It is important for us
all to understand the fundamentals of the equine digestive system
and realise how far removed the horse is now from his natural
